Red and green

Why are red and green associated with Christmas?

I'm not sure there is a historical fact that spells out the answer as much as there are theories.

One dates back to the 1300s when "Adam and Eve Day" was celebrated (on Dec 24). Part of this celebration included a "Paradise Tree" (green) decorated with apples (red apples, tree of good and evil).

Another talks about hope and blood, hope/green/Jesus and blood/red/Jesus.

These are interesting from a historic perspective but the truth is that almost none of us even think about these kinds of things... we just accept things for what they are and move ahead.

In case you are wondering, the photo to the right is of surfboards (taken underwater, looking toward the sky. I think it was taken by T. Campbell. I tweaked it a tad).

These kinds of things "are" Christmas to many of us. A tree... red and green, carols. Let's take a step back and ask questions. Is Christmas a group of traditions or a celebration of something more profound?
